MTV Channel

MTV is an American television channel which is the short form for Music Television and is based in New York. The channel was launched on August 1 in the year 1981 for the purpose of playing music videos guided by the on-air hosts also called as VJs. Today MTV is playing limited selection of certain music videos, and it broadcasts different pop culture and many reality TV shows targeted primarily on teens. MTV has had a great impact in music industry and pop culture since its premiere. There are slogans like “I want my MTV” which were very popular among public and the idea of VJ was getting more famous. They introduced a dedicated outlet based on video for music and both fans and artists found a great location for music news, promotion and events. MTV channel has got referenced myriad times in pop culture by films, books, TV shows and musicians.

MTV has got various sister channels in United States and many international affiliate channels. The moral influence of the channel among youngsters including the problems related to social activism and censorship has been debated for many years. MTV’s choice to show programs not related to music has got into debate since 1990s, demonstrating the impact of the channel on pop culture. MTV launched the show 120 minutes in 1986 which was really famous and showed great rotation along with underground videos and alternative rock for another fourteen years on MTV and another 3 years in MTV2, its sister channel it which it was called as Subterranean.

The Headbangers Ball was yet another after hours shows that they added during 1987. This show was very popular in US and it featured mainly heavy metal music and also music related news. It was cancelled abruptly in 1995 and previous to that many popular hosts namely Adam Curry and Riki Rachtman. There has been a sequence of music videos telecasted under the same title as Headbangers ball in MTV2 since the year 2003.

MTV launched the Yo! MTV Raps in 1988, which was hip-hop and rap combined music program which continued till 1995 August after which it was renamed as Yo! And telecasted for 1 hour till 1999. They reintroduced the same concept as a new program name Direct Effect in the year 2000 after which it became as Suck Free in the year 2006. MTV started its premiere music based programs like MTV Unplugged in the year 1989, which was an acoustic performance TV shows that features many guests and was performed more than 20 years.
